Posted on January 31, 2025

Here’s a comforting Amish Hamburger Steak recipe that’s full of rich flavor and served with a delicious onion and gravy sauce—perfect for a hearty dinner!

Ingredients:

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (preferably 80/20 for flavor)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (for frying)

For the Gravy:

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth (low-sodium)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Hamburger Steaks:

  • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined—be careful not to overwork the meat.
  • Shape the mixture into 4-6 oval or round patties, depending on your preference for size.

2. Cook the Hamburger Steaks:

  • Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Once hot, add the patties to the skillet. Cook for 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. The internal temperature of the patties should reach 160°F (71°C).
  • Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside on a plate. Keep warm.

3. Make the Gravy:

  • In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat, scraping up any bits from the bottom of the pan.
  • Add the sliced onions and cook for 4-5 minutes until softened and starting to caramelize.
  • Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to form a roux (a thick paste), constantly stirring to avoid burning.
  • Gradually whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Continue to cook and whisk until the gravy thickens (about 3-5 minutes). Season with salt and pepper to taste.

4. Combine and Serve:

  • Return the cooked hamburger steaks to the skillet, spoon some gravy over the top, and let them simmer in the gravy for an additional 5 minutes to meld the flavors.
  • Serve the hamburger steaks with the onion gravy, and enjoy with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite side dish!

This Amish Hamburger Steak recipe is rich, savory, and a real comfort food classic. The tender hamburger patties paired with the flavorful onion gravy are sure to satisfy any craving!

Would you like to customize it further, maybe adding mushrooms to the gravy or different seasonings?
