Posted on September 25, 2025

Here’s a classic, silky, and rich dessert—The Old Fashioned Custard Pie! It’s simple, with a smooth custard filling baked right in a flaky pie crust. Perfect for those who love timeless homemade desserts.

🥧🍮 The Old Fashioned Custard Pie

📝 Ingredients:

For the crust:

  • 1 9-inch pie crust (store-bought or homemade)

For the custard filling:

  • 3 large eggs

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 cups whole milk (or half-and-half for creamier texture)

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (plus extra for sprinkling on top)

  • 1/4 tsp salt

🥣 Instructions:

1. Preheat Oven:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

2. Prepare the Crust:

  • Fit your pie crust into a 9-inch pie plate.

  • Crimp edges as desired.

  • You can pre-bake (blind bake) the crust for 7 minutes if you want a crisper bottom, but it’s optional.

3. Make the Custard Filling:

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs and sugar until smooth.

  • Gradually add milk while whisking.

  • Stir in vanilla extract, nutmeg, and salt.

4. Assemble and Bake:

  • Pour the custard mixture into the pie crust.

  • Sprinkle a little extra nutmeg on top for a classic touch.

  • Bake for about 45–55 minutes until the custard is just set but still slightly jiggly in the center.

  • A knife or toothpick inserted near the center should come out clean.

5. Cool and Serve:

  • Let pie cool completely on a wire rack.

  • Chill in the fridge for a couple of hours before serving (optional).

  • Serve plain or with a dollop of whipped cream.

🍽️ Tips:

  • Don’t overbake — the custard will continue to set as it cools.

  • For a richer pie, substitute part of the milk with cream.

  • Nutmeg can be swapped with cinnamon or left out for a milder flavor.
