French Onion Beef And Noodles

Posted on September 22, 2025

Here’s a comforting and savory French Onion Beef and Noodles recipe — it’s like a cross between classic beef stroganoff and French onion soup, with tender beef, rich caramelized onion flavor, and egg noodles all in one cozy dish.

🧅 French Onion Beef and Noodles

🍽️ Servings: 4-6

⏱️ Total Time: ~45 minutes

🥘 Ingredients:

  • 1 lb beef sirloin or stew meat, cut into thin strips

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter

  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar (optional, for depth)

  • 1 packet French onion soup mix (like Lipton) or 2 cups homemade

  • 3 cups beef broth

  • 8 oz egg noodles, uncooked

  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

  • Fresh thyme or parsley, for garnish (optional)

🔪 Instructions:

  1. Caramelize the onions

    • In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat 1 tbsp of olive oil over medium heat.

    • Add sliced onions and cook slowly (about 10-15 minutes), stirring often until golden brown and soft. You can add a splash of balsamic vinegar to deepen the flavor.

  2. Cook the beef

    • Push onions to the side of the skillet. Add a bit more oil if needed.

    • Add the beef, season with salt and pepper, and sear until browned on all sides (about 5-7 minutes).

    • Stir in garlic and cook for another minute.

  3. Deglaze and add soup base

    • Pour in Worcestershire sauce and stir to deglaze the pan.

    • Add French onion soup mix and beef broth. Stir well.

  4. Simmer the noodles

    • Bring the mixture to a boil. Add uncooked egg noodles.

    • Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 8-10 minutes, or until noodles are tender. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

  5. Melt in the cheese

    • Once noodles are cooked and most liquid is absorbed, stir in the shredded cheese until melted and creamy.

  6. Serve

    • Garnish with fresh thyme or parsley if desired.

    • Serve hot with crusty bread or a green salad.

🧑‍🍳 Tips:

  • Want it creamier? Add ½ cup sour cream or a splash of heavy cream at the end.

  • Want it baked? Transfer to a casserole dish, top with extra cheese, and broil until bubbly and golden.
