BUTTER BISCUITS

Posted on January 28, 2025

Butter Biscuits are the perfect balance of soft, flaky, and buttery. They’re easy to make and are perfect for breakfast, brunch, or as a side for any meal. Here’s a simple recipe for delicious homemade butter biscuits:

Butter Biscuits Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional, for a hint of sweetness)
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 2/3 cup whole milk (or buttermilk for extra richness)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional, for flavor)

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
  2. Mix dry ingredients:
    • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar (if using).
  3. Cut in the butter:
    • Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter, fork, or your fingers to work the butter into the flour until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs with pea-sized butter pieces. This step is key to getting flaky biscuits.
  4. Add the milk:
    • Pour in the milk and vanilla extract (if using). Stir gently with a spoon until just combined. Be careful not to overmix—this will help keep your biscuits light and fluffy.
  5. Shape the dough:
    • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently pat it into a rectangle or circle about 1 inch thick.
    • Fold the dough in half and gently press it down again (this creates more layers). You can repeat this folding step 2-3 times for extra flakiness, but don’t overwork it.
    • Use a round biscuit cutter (or a glass) to cut out biscuits, pressing straight down without twisting (which could seal the edges).
  6. Bake:
    • Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, making sure they’re close together so they rise up rather than spread out.
    • Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.
  7. Serve:
    • Once done, remove from the oven and let the biscuits cool slightly. Serve warm with butter, jam, or honey.

Tips:

  • Cold butter: Make sure the butter is very cold when you add it to the flour. This helps create the flaky texture.
  • Don’t overwork the dough: Overmixing or overhandling the dough can result in dense biscuits. Gently stir and shape to preserve the fluffiness.
  • Flour your cutter: If your biscuit cutter or glass is sticking to the dough, lightly flour it to prevent it from dragging the dough.

These butter biscuits are buttery, soft, and perfect for any meal. Enjoy!
