Traditional Oven Peach Cobbler Recipe

Posted on September 1, 2025

Here’s a traditional Southern-style peach cobbler recipe made in the oven β€” rich, buttery, and full of juicy peaches. This is the kind of dessert that tastes like it came straight from grandma’s kitchen.

πŸ‘ Traditional Oven-Baked Peach Cobbler

πŸ• Prep Time: 15 mins

⏱️ Bake Time: 40–45 mins

🍽️ Serves: 6–8

Ingredients

πŸ‘ For the Peach Filling:

  • 6–8 ripe peaches (about 6 cups), peeled and sliced
(or use 2 cans of sliced peaches in juice, drained, or 1 bag frozen sliced peaches – thawed)

  • Β½ cup white sugar

  • Β½ cup brown sugar

  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

  • ΒΌ tsp ground nutmeg

  • 1 tsp lemon juice

  • 2 tsp cornstarch (helps thicken the filling)

🧈 For the Batter:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup white sugar

  • 1 tbsp baking powder

  • ΒΌ tsp salt

  • 1 cup milk

  • Β½ tsp vanilla extract (optional)

  • Β½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

πŸ”₯ Preheat Oven:

Preheat your oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C).

πŸ‘ Prepare the Peaches:

  1. If using fresh peaches, peel and slice them.

  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the peaches, both sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch.

  3. Stir and cook for about 5–10 minutes, until the mixture thickens slightly.
(If using canned or frozen peaches, still cook briefly to meld flavors.)

🧁 Make the Batter:

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

  2. Stir in the milk and vanilla until just combined. The batter will be smooth and pourable.

🧈 Assemble:

  1. Pour the melted butter into the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish (don’t stir it).

  2. Pour the batter over the butter β€” again, do not stir.

  3. Spoon the warm peach mixture on top of the batter. Do not stir β€” the batter will rise up around the fruit as it bakes.

πŸ”₯ Bake:

Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and set.

❄️ Cool & Serve:

Let it cool slightly before serving.
Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

βœ… Tips:

  • Want extra crisp edges? Sprinkle a little sugar and cinnamon on top before baking.

  • You can swap peaches for other fruit like berries or plums for variety.

  • If you prefer a thicker cobbler, reduce the amount of milk slightly or add 1–2 tbsp extra flour.
