Amish Hamburger Steak Bake Recipe
Ingredients:
For the hamburger steaks:
-
2 lbs ground beef (80/20 is ideal)
-
1 cup breadcrumbs (or crushed saltine crackers)
-
1/2 cup milk
-
1 large egg
-
1 small onion, finely diced
-
1 tsp garlic powder
-
1 tsp salt
-
1/2 tsp black pepper
For the gravy:
-
2 tbsp butter
-
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
-
2 cups beef broth
-
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
-
1/2 tsp onion powder
-
1/4 tsp black pepper
-
Optional: 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms
Instructions:
-
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
-
Prepare the hamburger steaks:
-
In a large bowl, mix together ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, diced onion, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
-
Shape the mixture into 6–8 oval patties (hamburger steaks) and place them in a greased 9×13″ baking dish.
-
-
Optional step: For added flavor and texture, lightly brown the patties in a skillet over medium-high heat before baking. (This helps keep them moist.)
-
Make the gravy:
-
In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
-
Whisk in flour to make a roux, cooking for 1-2 minutes until golden.
-
Slowly whisk in the beef broth until smooth.
-
Add Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, pepper, and mushrooms (if using).
-
Simmer for 3-5 minutes until thickened.
-
-
Assemble and bake:
-
Pour the gravy evenly over the hamburger steaks in the baking dish.
-
Cover with foil and bake for 45–55 minutes, until the patties are fully cooked (internal temp of 160°F).
-
-
Serve: Great with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or over Amish-style buttered noodles. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
Tips:
-
You can mix in chopped green pepper for extra flavor.
-
Some Amish cooks add a touch of cream to the gravy for richness.
