Amish Hamburger Steak Bake Recipe

Ingredients:

For the hamburger steaks:

  • 2 lbs ground beef (80/20 is ideal)

  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (or crushed saltine crackers)

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 small onion, finely diced

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

For the gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

  • Optional: 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Prepare the hamburger steaks:

    • In a large bowl, mix together ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, diced onion, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

    • Shape the mixture into 6–8 oval patties (hamburger steaks) and place them in a greased 9×13″ baking dish.

  3. Optional step: For added flavor and texture, lightly brown the patties in a skillet over medium-high heat before baking. (This helps keep them moist.)

  4. Make the gravy:

    • In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.

    • Whisk in flour to make a roux, cooking for 1-2 minutes until golden.

    • Slowly whisk in the beef broth until smooth.

    • Add Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, pepper, and mushrooms (if using).

    • Simmer for 3-5 minutes until thickened.

  5. Assemble and bake:

    • Pour the gravy evenly over the hamburger steaks in the baking dish.

    • Cover with foil and bake for 45–55 minutes, until the patties are fully cooked (internal temp of 160°F).

  6. Serve: Great with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or over Amish-style buttered noodles. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

Tips:

  • You can mix in chopped green pepper for extra flavor.

  • Some Amish cooks add a touch of cream to the gravy for richness.
