Here’s a simple and authentic Flour Tortilla recipe β€” soft, chewy, and perfect for tacos, burritos, wraps, or quesadillas. You only need 5 basic ingredients and no special equipment!


🌯 Homemade Flour Tortillas

🍽️ Makes: 8 medium tortillas

⏱️ Total Time: ~30 minutes

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil, lard, or softened butter

  • 3/4 cup warm water (may need a little more or less)

  • (Optional) 1/2 tsp baking powder (for slightly puffier tortillas)

1. Mix the Dough:

  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and baking powder (if using).

  • Add oil (or lard/butter) and mix with your fingers or a fork until crumbly.

  • Gradually add warm water while stirring until a soft dough forms.

2. Knead & Rest:

  • Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 3–5 minutes until smooth.

  • Cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let rest for 20–30 minutes (helps gluten relax for softer tortillas).

3. Divide & Roll:

  • Divide dough into 8 equal balls.

  • On a lightly floured surface, roll each ball into a thin circle (~7–8 inches). Don’t worry if they’re not perfect!

4. Cook the Tortillas:

  • Heat a dry skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.

  • Cook each tortilla for 30–45 seconds per side, or until bubbles form and brown spots appear.

  • Stack cooked tortillas in a clean towel to keep warm and soft.

  • Fridge: Store in a sealed bag up to 5 days.

  • Freezer: Freeze with parchment between each, up to 2 months.

  • Use whole wheat flour for a healthier version.
