Here’s a simple and delicious Hungarian Chicken Paprikash recipe that’s perfect for a cozy dinner. It features tender chicken in a rich, creamy paprika sauce. Best of all, it’s easy enough for a weeknight meal!

🌶️ Easy Hungarian Chicken Paprikash

🕒 Ready in: 45 minutes | 🍽️ Serves: 4

🛒 Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ lbs (about 700g) chicken thighs or drumsticks (bone-in or boneless)

  • 1 tbsp oil (vegetable or olive)

  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 2 tbsp sweet Hungarian paprika (use good quality!)

  • 1 tsp salt (or to taste)

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • 1 cup (240ml) chicken broth

  • ½ cup (120ml) sour cream

  • 1 tbsp flour (for thickening)

  • Optional: 1 bell pepper, sliced (for added flavor/color)

🍳 Instructions:

  1. Brown the Chicken
Heat oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the chicken and brown on both sides (about 4–5 minutes per side). Remove and set aside.

  2. Sauté Onion & Garlic
In the same pan, add a bit more oil if needed. Sauté the chopped onion until soft and golden (about 5 minutes). Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds.

  3. Add Paprika & Chicken
Remove the pan from heat briefly (to avoid burning the paprika), then stir in the paprika, salt, and pepper. Return to heat and add the chicken back to the pan.

  4. Simmer
Pour in the chicken broth, bring to a simmer, cover, and cook on low heat for about 25–30 minutes until the chicken is cooked through and tender.
(Add bell pepper now if using.)

  5. Make the Creamy Sauce
In a small bowl, mix the sour cream and flour until smooth. Stir a few spoonfuls of hot broth from the pan into the sour cream to temper it, then slowly stir the mixture back into the pan.

  6. Simmer to Thicken
Simmer uncovered for another 5–10 minutes until the sauce thickens. Taste and adjust seasoning.

🍽️ Serving Suggestions:

  • Serve over buttered egg noodles, spaetzle, rice, or mashed potatoes.

  • Garnish with chopped parsley or a dollop of sour cream.

✅ Tips:

  • Sweet paprika is key to this dish. Avoid smoked or hot paprika unless you want a twist.

  • You can use boneless chicken thighs for a quicker version.
