White German Chocolate Cake with a Cheesecake Center

Posted on August 25, 2025

That sounds like a decadent dessert mashup — combining the rich, nutty sweetness of German chocolate cake with the creamy indulgence of cheesecake. Here’s a recipe for a White German Chocolate Cake with a Cheesecake Center, including all components from scratch.

🍰 White German Chocolate Cake with a Cheesecake Center

🧀 Cheesecake Center (Make First)

Ingredients:

  • 2 (8 oz) packages cream cheese, softened

  • ½ cup granulated sugar

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • ¼ cup sour cream

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F (163°C). Grease a 9-inch springform pan and line bottom with parchment.

  2. Beat cream cheese until smooth. Add sugar and beat again.

  3. Mix in eggs one at a time, then vanilla and sour cream.

  4. Pour into the pan and bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the center is set.

  5. Let cool completely, then freeze for at least 2 hours (this helps it hold when layering in the cake).

🍰 White German Chocolate Cake Layers

Ingredients:

  • 1 box white cake mix or homemade (see below)

  • 4 oz German’s sweet baking chocolate (melted and cooled)

  • ½ cup buttermilk

  • ½ cup vegetable oil

  • 3 large eggs

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round pans.

  2. In a bowl, mix cake mix, melted chocolate, buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla until smooth.

  3. Divide between the two pans and bake for 25–30 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

  4. Cool completely.

🥥 Coconut-Pecan Frosting (Traditional German Chocolate Topping)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup evaporated milk

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 3 large egg yolks

  • ½ cup butter

  • 1½ tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 cup chopped pecans

  • 1½ cups sweetened shredded coconut

Instructions:

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, whisk milk, sugar, egg yolks, and butter until thickened (about 10–12 minutes).

  2. Remove from heat, stir in vanilla, pecans, and coconut. Cool to room temp.

🧁 Assembly

  1. Trim cake layers flat, if needed.

  2. Place one cake layer on your cake plate.

  3. Unmold cheesecake layer and place it over the first cake layer.

  4. Add second cake layer on top.

  5. Frost the top and sides with Coconut-Pecan Frosting.

  6. Chill for at least 1 hour before slicing for clean cuts.

Optional Add-Ons:

  • Drizzle chocolate ganache on top.

  • Add toasted coconut for texture.

  • Whipped cream border for decoration.
