Air Fryer Au Gratin Potatoes

Posted on August 6, 2025

Absolutely! Here’s a comforting and crispy Air Fryer Au Gratin Potatoes recipe — all the creamy, cheesy goodness of traditional au gratin, but faster and with a beautiful golden top thanks to the air fryer.

Air Fryer Au Gratin Potatoes

Creamy, cheesy layers of potatoes cooked to perfection in your air fryer.

🥔 Ingredients:

  • 2–3 medium Yukon gold or russet potatoes, thinly sliced (about 1/8″ thick)

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup milk (whole or 2%)

  • ½ cup heavy cream (or more milk)

  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese

  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella or Gruyère (optional)

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

  • Salt & pepper to taste

  • Optional: ¼ teaspoon paprika or thyme for seasoning

  • Nonstick spray or oil (for greasing the dish)

  • Optional: 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan (for the top)

🍳 Instructions:

1. Make the Cheese Sauce

  • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.

  • Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute to form a roux.

  • Slowly add the milk and cream, whisking constantly until smooth and slightly thickened (3–5 minutes).

  • Stir in cheddar, mozzarella (if using), garlic powder, salt, pepper, and optional paprika. Stir until cheese is melted and sauce is smooth. Remove from heat.

2. Assemble the Potatoes

  • Spray a small oven-safe baking dish (that fits your air fryer basket) with nonstick spray or oil.

  • Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the dish.

  • Pour over half the cheese sauce.

  • Add remaining potatoes and top with the rest of the sauce.

  • Sprinkle with Parmesan if desired.

3. Air Fry

  • Preheat air fryer to 350°F (175°C) for 3 minutes.

  • Cover the dish with foil and place it in the air fryer basket.

  • Air fry at 350°F for 25 minutes covered.

  • Remove foil and air fry another 10–15 minutes, or until:

    • Potatoes are tender

    • Top is golden brown and bubbly

4. Cool and Serve

  • Let sit for 5–10 minutes before serving so the sauce thickens slightly.

✅ Tips:

  • Slice potatoes evenly for even cooking. Use a mandoline if you have one.

  • If using russet potatoes, soak in water for 10 minutes and pat dry to remove excess starch (for better texture).

  • Add a sprinkle of chives or bacon bits on top before serving for a deluxe finish.
