Posted on August 5, 2025

Here’s a comfort food classic: Ground Beef & Gravy with Mashed Potatoes — simple, hearty, and satisfying. It’s like a shortcut Salisbury steak meets shepherd’s pie (minus the baking). Perfect for a weeknight meal.

🍽️ Ground Beef & Gravy with Mashed Potatoes

🕒 Ready in: 30 minutes

🍽️ Serves: 4

🧄 Ingredients:

For the Ground Beef & Gravy:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 or lean)

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • ½ tsp onion powder

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • Salt & pepper, to taste

  • 1 tbsp oil or butter (if needed)

Optional:

  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced (for mushroom gravy version)

  • Fresh parsley, for garnish

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 2 lbs potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet), peeled & cubed

  • ½ cup milk (or cream, for richness)

  • 3 tbsp butter

  • Salt & pepper, to taste

🔥 Instructions:

1. Make the Mashed Potatoes:

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.

  • Add potatoes and boil for 12–15 minutes, until fork tender.

  • Drain, return to pot. Add butter, milk, salt, and pepper.

  • Mash until smooth and creamy. Cover to keep warm.

2. Cook the Beef:

  • In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat.

  • Add onion (and mushrooms if using), cook until softened (about 5–7 mins).

  • Add garlic, cook 1 minute more.

  • Drain excess fat if needed.

3. Make the Gravy:

  • Sprinkle flour over the beef mixture, stir and cook for 1 minute.

  • Slowly stir in beef broth, scraping up brown bits.

  • Add Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, and garlic powder.

  • Simmer for 5–7 minutes, until thickened. Season with salt & pepper.

4. Assemble & Serve:

  • Spoon mashed potatoes onto plates.

  • Top with a generous ladle of beef & gravy.

  • Garnish with parsley if you like.

✅ Tips & Variations:

  • Use boxed mashed potatoes to save time.

  • Swap ground beef with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.

  • Add frozen peas or mixed vegetables to the gravy for a one-pan meal.

  • Use cornstarch slurry instead of flour for a gluten-free option.
