🧀 Cheesy Hamburger Potato Casserole

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 lbs (700g) ground beef

  • 4 cups potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced (Yukon Gold or Russet work well)

  • 1 medium onion, chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup (or cream of celery)

  • 1 cup sour cream

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (plus extra for topping)

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 2 tbsp butter or oil

  • Fresh parsley or chives, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions:

1. Preheat oven:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch casserole dish.

2. Cook the beef:

  • In a large skillet, heat butter or oil over medium heat.

  • Add chopped onion and garlic; sauté until translucent.

  • Add ground beef, cook until browned and cooked through. Drain excess fat.

  • Season with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce (if using). Set aside.

3. Prepare the sauce:

  • In a bowl, mix condensed soup, sour cream, milk, and 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese.

4. Assemble the casserole:

  • Layer half of the sliced potatoes evenly in the casserole dish.

  • Spread half of the cooked beef mixture over the potatoes.

  • Pour half of the cheese sauce over the beef.

  • Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, beef, and sauce.

5. Bake:

  • Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.

  • Remove foil, sprinkle extra cheddar cheese on top.

  • Bake uncovered for another 15 minutes or until potatoes are tender and cheese is bubbly and golden.

6. Serve:

  • Let cool for a few minutes before serving.

  • Garnish with chopped parsley or chives.

Tips:

  • For extra flavor, add sautéed mushrooms or bell peppers with the beef.

  • Use thinly sliced potatoes for even cooking or parboil the potatoes for 5 minutes before assembling.

  • Swap cheddar with Monterey Jack or mozzarella for a different cheese profile.
