Homemade Hamburger Peppers And Onion Gyros

Here’s a delicious, homemade take on Hamburger, Peppers, and Onion Gyros — a fusion-style gyro that’s easy to make with everyday ingredients. Juicy seasoned ground beef, sautéed peppers and onions, all wrapped in warm pita with a creamy sauce. Perfect for a weeknight dinner with big flavor and minimal fuss!


🥙 Homemade Hamburger, Peppers & Onion Gyros

📝 Ingredients (Serves 4)

For the Beef

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • 1 tsp dried oregano

  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika

  • Salt & black pepper, to taste

  • Optional: 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce or a pinch of cumin for depth

For the Peppers & Onions

  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced

  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced

  • 1 yellow onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • Salt & pepper, to taste

For the Creamy Sauce

  • 1/2 cup Greek yogurt or sour cream

  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

  • 1 clove garlic, minced

  • 1 tbsp chopped fresh dill (or 1/2 tsp dried)

  • Salt & pepper, to taste

✅ Or use store-bought tzatziki for convenience.

For Serving

  • 4–6 pita or flatbreads

  • Optional toppings: chopped tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, crumbled feta


🔧 Instructions

1. Cook the Beef

  • In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef.

  • Add seasonings and cook until fully browned and flavorful (about 8–10 minutes).

  • Drain excess grease if needed and keep warm.

2. Sauté Peppers & Onions

  • In a separate skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high.

  • Add sliced peppers and onions. Cook, stirring occasionally, until soft and slightly caramelized (about 10–12 minutes).

  • Season with salt and pepper to taste.

3. Make the Creamy Sauce

  • In a bowl, mix Greek yogurt, lemon juice, garlic, dill, salt, and pepper.

  • Chill until ready to serve.

4. Warm the Pitas

  • Lightly warm pita bread in a skillet, oven, or microwave.

5. Assemble the Gyros

  • Spread sauce on warm pita.

  • Top with seasoned hamburger, sautéed peppers and onions.

  • Add optional toppings like fresh tomato, lettuce, or feta.


🧄 Tips & Variations

  • Use ground lamb or turkey instead of beef for a different twist.

  • Make a gyro bowl by serving ingredients over rice or salad instead of pita.

  • Add hot sauce or harissa for extra heat.
