Old Fashioned Goulash

Posted on July 7, 2025

Here’s a classic Old Fashioned Goulash recipe, just like grandma used to make—simple, hearty, and full of flavor.

🍲 Old Fashioned American Goulash

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • 1 large yellow onion, chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 2 pounds ground beef

  • 2 cups elbow macaroni (uncooked)

  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce

  • 2 cans (14.5 oz each) diced tomatoes (with juice)

  • 1½ cups beef broth (or water)

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning

  • 1 teaspoon paprika (optional for a smoky flavor)

  • Salt and black pepper to taste

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Sauté Aromatics:

    • Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.

    • Add the chopped onion and sautĂ© until soft (about 5 minutes).

    • Stir in garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

  2. Cook the Beef:

    • Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon.

    • Drain excess grease if necessary.

  3. Add Tomatoes and Seasonings:

    • Stir in tomato sauce, diced tomatoes (with juice), beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, paprika, salt, and pepper.

    • Bring to a simmer.

  4. Add Pasta:

    • Stir in the uncooked elbow macaroni.

    • Cover and simmer for about 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until pasta is tender. Add a splash of water or broth if it gets too thick.

  5. (Optional) Add Cheese:

    • Stir in shredded cheese until melted, or sprinkle on top before serving.

  6. Serve:

    • Garnish with fresh parsley or extra cheese if desired.

    • Serve warm with crusty bread or a green salad.
