Here’s a simple and delicious recipe for Air Fryer Crispy Fried Onions, perfect for topping green bean casserole, burgers, salads, or just snacking. These come out golden, crunchy, and way less greasy than deep-fried ones—Grandma Mari would approve of the thrift and flavor.


🧅 Air Fryer Crispy Fried Onions

🧂 Ingredients:

  • 1 large yellow or white onion, thinly sliced

  • ½ cup buttermilk (or milk + 1 tsp vinegar/lemon juice)

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour

  • ¼ cup cornstarch (makes them extra crispy)

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ½ tsp garlic powder (optional)

  • ¼ tsp black pepper

  • Cooking spray (like avocado or olive oil)


🔪 Instructions:

  1. Slice the Onions:

    • Peel and thinly slice the onion into rings or strips (about ⅛ inch thick).

  2. Soak:

    • Place onions in a bowl with buttermilk and let them soak for 10–15 minutes. This softens them and helps the coating stick.

  3. Mix Dry Coating:

    • In another bowl, combine flour, cornstarch, salt, pepper, and optional garlic powder.

  4. Coat the Onions:

    • Remove onions from the buttermilk (shake off excess) and toss in the flour mixture until fully coated.

  5. Air Fry:

    • Preheat air fryer to 300°F (150°C).

    • Lightly spray the air fryer basket with oil. Spread onions out in a thin layer (work in batches if needed).

    • Spray the tops of the onions lightly with oil.

    • Air fry for 10–15 minutes, shaking or tossing every 5 minutes, until golden and crispy. If they’re browning too quickly, lower the temp slightly.

  6. Cool & Crisp:

    • Let them cool on a rack or paper towel. They’ll crisp up more as they cool.

  • Add a pinch of paprika or onion powder for depth.

  • Mix in a few shallot slices for sweetness.
