🧅 Air Fryer Crispy Fried Onions
🧂 Ingredients:
-
1 large yellow or white onion, thinly sliced
-
½ cup buttermilk (or milk + 1 tsp vinegar/lemon juice)
-
½ cup all-purpose flour
-
¼ cup cornstarch (makes them extra crispy)
-
½ tsp salt
-
½ tsp garlic powder (optional)
-
¼ tsp black pepper
-
Cooking spray (like avocado or olive oil)
🔪 Instructions:
-
Slice the Onions:
-
Peel and thinly slice the onion into rings or strips (about ⅛ inch thick).
-
-
Soak:
-
Place onions in a bowl with buttermilk and let them soak for 10–15 minutes. This softens them and helps the coating stick.
-
-
Mix Dry Coating:
-
In another bowl, combine flour, cornstarch, salt, pepper, and optional garlic powder.
-
-
Coat the Onions:
-
Remove onions from the buttermilk (shake off excess) and toss in the flour mixture until fully coated.
-
-
Air Fry:
-
Preheat air fryer to 300°F (150°C).
-
Lightly spray the air fryer basket with oil. Spread onions out in a thin layer (work in batches if needed).
-
Spray the tops of the onions lightly with oil.
-
Air fry for 10–15 minutes, shaking or tossing every 5 minutes, until golden and crispy. If they’re browning too quickly, lower the temp slightly.
-
-
Cool & Crisp:
-
Let them cool on a rack or paper towel. They’ll crisp up more as they cool.
-
🧄 Grandma Mari’s Touches:
-
Add a pinch of paprika or onion powder for depth.
-
Mix in a few shallot slices for sweetness.
-
Save onion ends and peels for soup stock—waste not!
