Impossible Cheeseburger Pie

Posted on July 5, 2025
The Impossible Cheeseburger Pie is a retro, comforting, and super easy dish made famous by Bisquick in the 1970s. It tastes like a cheeseburger in casserole form — a savory pie with seasoned beef, cheese, and a magically self-forming crust made from a simple batter.

🍔 Impossible Cheeseburger Pie

📝 Ingredients (Serves 6):

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef

  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ¼ tsp black pepper

  • 1 cup (115 g) shredded cheddar cheese (or a mix of cheddar and mozzarella)

  • ½ cup Bisquick mix (see below for homemade substitute)

  • 1 cup milk

  • 2 large eggs

Optional add-ins:
– 1 tbsp mustard or ketchup (mixed with beef)
– Pickle slices or jalapeños (on top)
– A few dashes of Worcestershire sauce

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a 9-inch pie dish or round baking dish.

  2. Cook the beef & onion:
In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and chopped onion until the beef is browned. Drain excess fat. Season with salt and pepper (add mustard or Worcestershire if desired). Spread evenly in the pie dish.

  3. Add the cheese:
Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over the beef.

  4. Make the batter:
In a bowl, whisk together Bisquick mix, milk, and eggs until smooth.

  5. Pour and bake:
Pour the batter over the meat and cheese. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean and the top is golden.

  6. Cool slightly and serve:
Let it rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing.

🍽️ Serving Suggestions:

  • Serve with a green salad, coleslaw, or roasted veggies

  • Add a squirt of ketchup, mustard, or sriracha on top

  • Great for weeknight dinners or meal prep

🏠 Homemade Bisquick Substitute (½ cup):

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • 1 tbsp cold butter or shortening

  • Pinch of salt
→ Cut the butter into the flour until it resembles crumbs.
