Nannie’s Buttermilk Pie

Posted on June 4, 2025
Here’s a heartwarming, old-fashioned recipe for Nannie’s Buttermilk Pie — a Southern classic with a creamy, custardy filling and just the right balance of sweet and tangy. It’s simple, nostalgic, and perfect with a dollop of whipped cream or fresh berries.

🥧 Nannie’s Buttermilk Pie

🕒 Prep Time: 10 minutes

🔥 Bake Time: 45–50 minutes
🍽 Yields: 1 pie (8 servings)

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar

  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 3 large eggs

  • 1 cup buttermilk

  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 tbsp lemon juice (or vinegar for more tang)

  • ⅛ tsp salt

  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust (homemade or store-bought)

  • Optional: a pinch of nutmeg or cinnamon on top

Instructions

1. Preheat the Oven

  • Set oven to 350°F (175°C).

2. Mix the Filling

  • In a large bowl, whisk together sugar and flour.

  • Add eggs and beat until smooth.

  • Stir in buttermilk, melted butter, vanilla, lemon juice, and salt. Mix well until fully combined.

3. Assemble the Pie

  • Pour the filling into the unbaked pie shell.

  • Optional: sprinkle a dash of nutmeg or cinnamon on top.

4. Bake

  • Bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the top is golden and the center is just set (it will still jiggle slightly).

  • Let cool completely on a wire rack. Pie will firm up as it cools.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve at room temperature or chilled.

  • Top with whipped cream, fresh berries, or a dusting of powdered sugar.

📝 Tips

  • Don’t confuse this with chess pie — this one is tangier and creamier thanks to the buttermilk.

  • If your crust browns too fast, cover the edges with foil during the last 15–20 minutes of baking.
