Here’s a rich, creamy, and absolutely irresistible recipe for the Best Scalloped Potatoes — perfect as a comforting side dish for holidays, family dinners, or anytime you want something indulgent and cheesy.


🧀 Best Ever Scalloped Potatoes

🥔 What They Are:

Thinly sliced potatoes baked in a creamy garlic cheese sauce until golden, bubbly, and tender. No shortcuts — just classic comfort food done right.


🧾 Ingredients:

  • 2 ½ lbs (about 5–6 medium) russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced

  • 3 tbsp butter

  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups whole milk (warm)

  • 1 cup heavy cream

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

  • 1 ½ tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • 1 ½ cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese

  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

  • Optional: ½ tsp thyme or fresh chives for garnish


👨‍🍳 Instructions:

1. Prep:

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

  • Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

2. Make the Cream Sauce:

  • In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.

  • Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds.

  • Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute to form a roux.

  • Gradually whisk in warm milk and cream.

  • Cook, stirring often, until thickened (about 4–5 minutes).

  • Stir in salt, pepper, and 1 cup cheddar + ¼ cup Parmesan. Mix until smooth.

3. Assemble the Dish:

  • Layer half the sliced potatoes in the dish.

  • Pour over half the cheese sauce.

  • Add remaining potatoes, then top with the rest of the sauce.

  • Sprinkle remaining cheddar and Parmesan on top.

4. Bake:

  • Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.

  • Uncover and bake another 25–30 minutes, until golden and bubbly.

  • Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.


🧠 Tips:

  • Use a mandoline for even, thin potato slices.

  • Add thin-sliced onions between layers for extra flavor.

  • For extra richness, stir in a pinch of nutmeg or a layer of Gruyère.
