🌮 Homemade Picadillo with Flour Tortillas

🥘 Picadillo Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (or ground turkey)

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 small bell pepper, diced

  • 1 medium potato, diced small

  • 1 cup canned diced tomatoes (or 2 fresh tomatoes, chopped)

  • ¼ cup tomato sauce or 2 tbsp tomato paste

  • ½ teaspoon cumin

  • ½ teaspoon paprika

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • Optional: olives, raisins, or chopped cilantro for garnish

🫓 Flour Tortilla Ingredients (makes ~8):

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ¾ cup warm water

  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil (or melted butter/lard)

🔥 Instructions

Make the Picadillo:

  1. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add onion, garlic, and bell pepper. Sauté until softened (3–5 minutes).

  2. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart.

  3. Stir in diced potatoes and cook for 2–3 minutes.

  4. Add tomatoes, tomato sauce, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper.

  5. Cover and simmer for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the potatoes are tender and the mixture thickens.

  6. Optional: Stir in green olives or raisins for a sweet-savory kick.

Make the Flour Tortillas:

  1. In a bowl, mix flour and salt. Add warm water and oil, then stir until a dough forms.

  2. Knead for 3–5 minutes until smooth. Let rest, covered, for 20 minutes.

  3. Divide into 8 balls. Roll each into a thin circle.

  4. Heat a dry skillet over medium-high heat. Cook each tortilla for ~1 minute per side or until bubbles and light golden spots appear.

  5. Keep warm in a towel until serving.

🥄 To Serve:

Spoon the picadillo into warm tortillas, fold, and enjoy. You can also top with avocado, shredded cheese, or fresh cilantro.
