Here’s a crave-worthy recipe for Crispy Fried Dough Pockets — golden on the outside and perfect for sweet or savory fillings. Think of them as a cross between empanadas, hand pies, and fried dumplings.


🥟 Crispy Fried Dough Pockets

Dough Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 tbsp oil or melted butter

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/2 cup warm water (adjust as needed)

  • Optional: 1/2 tsp baking powder (for a slightly puffier result)


Filling Options:

Savory Ideas:

  • Mashed potatoes & cheese

  • Ground beef with onions & spices

  • Spinach & feta

  • Leftover curry or taco meat

Sweet Ideas:

  • Nutella & banana

  • Apple pie filling with cinnamon

  • Sweetened cream cheese & berries


Instructions:

  1. Make the Dough:

    • In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, and (optional) baking powder.

    • Add oil and mix until crumbly.

    • Slowly add water and knead into a soft, smooth dough.

    • Cover and let rest for 20–30 minutes.

  2. Prepare Fillings:

    • Cook savory fillings if needed and cool.

    • Sweet fillings should be thick (not runny) to avoid leaks.

  3. Assemble:

    • Divide dough into equal pieces (golf-ball sized).

    • Roll out each into a 4–5 inch circle.

    • Add 1–2 tbsp filling to one half.

    • Fold over and press edges with a fork to seal. You can also crimp or twist edges.

  4. Fry:

    • Heat oil in a deep pan to 350–360°F (175–180°C).

    • Fry a few at a time until golden brown on both sides (2–3 minutes per side).

    • Drain on paper towels.


Serving Suggestions:

  • Dust sweet versions with powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar.

  • Serve savory ones with dipping sauces (yogurt dip, marinara, salsa, etc.).
