🥛 Homemade Sweetened Condensed Milk
🍽️ Yields: ~1 cup (equivalent to one 14 oz can)
⏱️ Total Time: ~15–20 minutes
🧂 Ingredients:
Stovetop Version:
-
1 cup (240 ml) whole milk
-
1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
-
2 tbsp unsalted butter
-
½ tsp vanilla extract (optional)
Dairy-Free Version:
-
1 cup full-fat canned coconut milk or almond milk
-
⅔ cup sugar or maple syrup
-
1 tbsp coconut oil or vegan butter (optional)
-
½ tsp vanilla (optional)
🔥 Instructions (Stovetop Method):
-
Combine milk and sugar in a small, heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat.
-
Stir continuously until sugar dissolves and mixture comes to a gentle simmer.
-
Reduce heat to low and simmer gently (no boiling) for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the volume is reduced by about a third and it thickens slightly.
-
Remove from heat, stir in butter and vanilla (if using), and let cool.
-
As it cools, it will thicken further. Store in a clean jar in the fridge for up to 1 week.
⚠️ Don’t rush it with high heat—it can curdle or caramelize too fast.
⚡ Quick Blender Version (No Cook):
-
Blend 1 cup dry milk powder, ⅔ cup sugar, ⅓ cup boiling water, and 3 tbsp melted butter.
-
Blend until smooth and creamy. Cool before using.
