🍞 Soft Dinner Rolls Recipe
Ingredients (Makes 12–16 rolls):
-
3½ cups (440g) all-purpose or bread flour
-
2¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast or instant yeast
-
¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar
-
1 tsp salt
-
1 cup (240ml) warm milk (about 110°F / 43°C)
-
¼ cup (60g) unsalted butter, melted (plus more for brushing)
-
1 large egg
🧁 Instructions:
-
Activate yeast (if using active dry):
In a small bowl, mix warm milk with sugar and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy. If using instant yeast, skip this step and mix it directly with the dry ingredients. -
Make the dough:
In a large bowl (or stand mixer), combine flour and salt. Add milk mixture (or warm milk, sugar, and yeast if instant), egg, and melted butter. Mix until a soft dough forms. -
Knead:
Knead by hand for 10 minutes (or with a mixer for 5–7 mins) until smooth and elastic. Add a bit more flour if sticky, but keep it soft. -
First Rise:
Place dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1–1.5 hours or until doubled. -
Shape Rolls:
Punch down dough, divide into 12–16 equal pieces. Shape into balls and place in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish or on a baking sheet. -
Second Rise:
Cover and let rise again for about 45 minutes, until puffy. -
Bake:
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake rolls for 15–18 minutes or until golden brown. -
Finish:
Brush warm rolls with melted butter. Let cool slightly before serving.
🧈 Optional Add-Ons:
-
Mix in garlic butter for garlic rolls
-
Add a sprinkle of sea salt or herbs on top
-
Substitute some milk with buttermilk for extra tenderness
