Here’s a classic and irresistible Fried Green Tomatoes recipe — crispy, golden slices of tart green tomatoes with a savory Southern-style breading. They’re perfect as an appetizer, snack, or side dish, especially with a dipping sauce like remoulade or ranch!


🍅 Fried Green Tomatoes (Southern Style)

🔸 Ingredients

  • 3–4 medium green (unripe) tomatoes, sliced ¼-inch thick

  • Salt (to draw out moisture)

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour

  • 2 large eggs

  • ¼ cup buttermilk (or regular milk)

  • ½ cup cornmeal

  • ½ cup breadcrumbs (panko or regular)

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp paprika or cayenne (optional, for spice)

  • Freshly ground black pepper

  • Oil, for frying (vegetable or peanut oil)


🔹 Instructions

  1. Prep the tomatoes:

    • Slice tomatoes and lay them out on paper towels.

    • Sprinkle with salt and let them sit for 15–20 minutes to draw out moisture.

    • Pat dry.

  2. Set up a breading station:

    • Bowl 1: Flour, with a bit of black pepper.

    • Bowl 2: Eggs + buttermilk, whisked together.

    • Bowl 3: Cornmeal, breadcrumbs, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.

  3. Bread the tomatoes:

    • Dredge each slice in flour, then dip in the egg mixture, and finally coat in the cornmeal-breadcrumb mix.

    • Press the coating on firmly for extra crispiness.

  4. Fry:

    • Heat ½ inch of oil in a cast iron skillet or heavy pan over medium heat (350°F / 175°C).

    • Fry tomatoes in batches, about 2–3 minutes per side, until golden brown.

    • Drain on paper towels.

  5. Serve hot, with a creamy dipping sauce like ranch, Cajun aioli, or remoulade.


✨ Tips:

  • For extra crunch, use all panko in the coating.

  • Add hot sauce to the egg mixture for a little kick.
