Ambrosia Salad

Posted on May 3, 2025
Here’s a classic, creamy Ambrosia Salad recipe—a sweet, fluffy fruit salad that’s a staple at Southern gatherings, holidays, and potlucks. It’s incredibly easy to make and full of nostalgic charm.

Classic Ambrosia Salad

Ingredients:

  • 1 can (15 oz) mandarin oranges, drained

  • 1 can (20 oz) pineapple chunks or tidbits, drained

  • 1 cup mini marshmallows

  • 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut

  • 1 1/2 cups sour cream or whipped topping (like Cool Whip, or a mix of both)

  • 1/2 cup chopped maraschino cherries, drained and patted dry

  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

  • 1–2 bananas, sliced (optional, best added just before serving)

Instructions:

  1. Mix the base:

    • In a large bowl, gently stir together sour cream (or whipped topping), coconut, and mini marshmallows.

  2. Add the fruit:

    • Gently fold in mandarin oranges, pineapple, cherries, and nuts if using.

  3. Chill:

    • Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (or overnight) to let the flavors meld and marshmallows soften.

  4. Serve:

    • Stir gently before serving. Top with extra cherries, marshmallows, or a sprinkle of coconut if desired.

Tips:

  • For a fluffier version, use half sour cream and half Cool Whip.

  • Add sliced grapes, diced apples, or fresh strawberries for extra freshness.

  • Best enjoyed cold—keep chilled until serving.

Would you like a lighter version using Greek yogurt, or a vintage-style one with fruit cocktail?
