SMOTHERED HAMBURGER STEAK

Here’s a hearty, Southern-style Smothered Hamburger Steak recipe—juicy beef patties simmered in rich onion and mushroom gravy. It’s pure comfort food!


🥩 Smothered Hamburger Steak

Ingredients:

For the Steak Patties:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 preferred)

  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 1 tbsp oil or butter (for frying)

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms (optional but tasty)

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Optional: a splash of heavy cream or a pinch of thyme for extra flavor


Instructions:

1. Make the Patties:

  • In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.

  • Form into 4 equal patties (about ¾-inch thick).

2. Sear the Patties:

  • Heat oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat.

  • Cook patties 3–4 minutes per side, until nicely browned but not fully cooked through.

  • Remove and set aside.

3. Make the Gravy:

  • In the same skillet, melt butter.

  • Add onions (and mushrooms, if using) and cook until soft and golden (8–10 minutes).

  • Stir in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes to form a roux.

  • Gradually whisk in beef broth. Add Worcestershire, salt, and pepper.

  • Let it simmer and thicken for 3–5 minutes.

4. Simmer the Steaks:

  • Return patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.

  • Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10–15 minutes, or until patties are fully cooked and tender.


Serve with:

Mashed potatoes, rice, or buttery egg noodles—plus green beans or collard greens on the side.
