🥩 Smothered Hamburger Steak
Ingredients:
For the Steak Patties:
-
1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 preferred)
-
1/4 cup breadcrumbs
-
1 egg
-
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
-
1/2 tsp garlic powder
-
1/2 tsp onion powder
-
Salt and pepper to taste
-
1 tbsp oil or butter (for frying)
For the Onion Gravy:
-
1 large onion, thinly sliced
-
1 cup sliced mushrooms (optional but tasty)
-
2 tbsp butter
-
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
-
2 cups beef broth
-
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
-
Salt and pepper to taste
-
Optional: a splash of heavy cream or a pinch of thyme for extra flavor
Instructions:
1. Make the Patties:
-
In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
-
Form into 4 equal patties (about ¾-inch thick).
2. Sear the Patties:
-
Heat oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat.
-
Cook patties 3–4 minutes per side, until nicely browned but not fully cooked through.
-
Remove and set aside.
3. Make the Gravy:
-
In the same skillet, melt butter.
-
Add onions (and mushrooms, if using) and cook until soft and golden (8–10 minutes).
-
Stir in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes to form a roux.
-
Gradually whisk in beef broth. Add Worcestershire, salt, and pepper.
-
Let it simmer and thicken for 3–5 minutes.
4. Simmer the Steaks:
-
Return patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.
-
Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10–15 minutes, or until patties are fully cooked and tender.
Serve with:
Mashed potatoes, rice, or buttery egg noodles—plus green beans or collard greens on the side.
