Beef and Gravy

A classic Beef and Gravy dish is pure comfort food—tender beef simmered in a rich, savory gravy that’s perfect over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles. Think pot roast vibes, but simplified.

Here’s a hearty, homestyle recipe:


Beef and Gravy (Stovetop or Slow Cooker)

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs beef chuck, stew meat, or sirloin tips (cut into chunks)

  • 2 tbsp flour (for dredging)

  • Salt & pepper

  • 2 tbsp oil or butter

  • 1 small onion, diced

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp thyme (or rosemary)

  • 1 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp water (for thickening)


Instructions (Stovetop):

  1. Season and dredge beef in flour, salt, and pepper.

  2. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, sear beef in oil until browned. Remove and set aside.

  3. In the same pan, sauté onion and garlic until soft.

  4. Add the beef back to the pan. Stir in broth, Worcestershire, and herbs.

  5. Simmer covered on low for 1.5–2 hours, until beef is fork-tender.

  6. Mix cornstarch + water, stir in to thicken gravy. Simmer uncovered 5–10 mins more.


Slow Cooker Option:

  • Sear the beef first for more flavor (optional).

  • Add everything (except cornstarch) to the slow cooker.

  • Cook on LOW 7–8 hours or HIGH 4–5 hours.

  • Stir in cornstarch slurry at the end, cook 15–30 minutes more to thicken.
