Tuna salad sandwich with fresh caught Appalachian tuna.

Ah, got it—you’re going full local with a wink! Here’s a playful but seriously tasty Tuna Salad Sandwich with Fresh-Caught “Appalachian Tuna” (aka local mountain trout):


 Appalachian Tuna Salad Sandwich (Mountain Trout Edition)

Ingredients:

  • 1 filet fresh trout (pan-seared, grilled, or baked)

  • 2–3 tbsp mayo (Duke’s if you’re keeping it Southern)

  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard

  • 1 rib celery, finely diced

  • 1 tbsp red onion, finely chopped

  • 1 tsp fresh dill (or ½ tsp dried)

  • Squeeze of lemon juice

  • Salt & pepper, to taste

  • 2 slices hearty bread (toasted if you like)

  • Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato slices, pickles

Directions:

  1. Cook your trout: Season with salt and pepper, then grill, sear, or bake until cooked through and flaky. Let it cool slightly.

  2. Flake the fish with a fork, removing any bones.

  3. In a bowl, mix trout with mayo, mustard, celery, onion, dill, and lemon juice.

  4. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  5. Assemble the sandwich with your favorite toppings on toasted or fresh bread.

  6. Serve with chips, a pickle, or sweet tea if you’re feeling it.
