Fried green tomatoes

Posted on April 24, 2025
Yesss!  Fried green tomatoes are the ultimate Southern comfort snack—crispy, tangy, and seriously addictive. Whether you’re making them as an appetizer, side dish, or even stacking them in a sandwich, here’s a super easy recipe to get that golden crunch just right.

Easy Fried Green Tomatoes Recipe

 Ingredients:

  • 3–4 firm green tomatoes (unripe, not heirloom greens)

  • Salt and pepper

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour

  • 2 eggs, beaten

  • ½ cup buttermilk (optional, adds flavor)

  • ¾ cup cornmeal

  • ½ cup breadcrumbs (for extra crunch)

  • ½ tsp paprika or cayenne (optional for kick)

  • Oil for frying (vegetable or peanut oil works great)

 Instructions:

  1. Slice the tomatoes into ¼-inch thick rounds. Lay them out and sprinkle both sides with salt. Let them sit for 10–15 min to draw out moisture, then blot with paper towels.

  2. Prep your dredge stations:

    • Plate 1: Flour (seasoned with salt & pepper)

    • Bowl: Egg + buttermilk mixture

    • Plate 2: Cornmeal + breadcrumbs + optional paprika/cayenne

  3. Dredge time:

    • Dip tomato slices in flour → egg mix → cornmeal/breadcrumb mix

    • Press gently to make sure coating sticks well

  4. Heat oil in a skillet (about ½ inch deep) over medium heat until hot but not smoking (350°F if using a thermometer).

  5. Fry in batches: 2–3 minutes per side until golden and crispy. Drain on a paper towel-lined plate.

 Serve With:

  • Remoulade, ranch, or spicy aioli

  • Add to a BLT or southern-style burger

  • Top with goat cheese or pimento cheese

Wanna bake or air fry them instead? Or want a gluten-free version? Let me know—I’ve got hacks for all of it!
