Boiling orange peels with cloves

Posted on April 6, 2025

Boiling orange peels with cloves creates a wonderful, natural potpourri that fills your home with a warm, cozy fragrance. It’s a great way to add a pleasant scent, especially during colder months. Here’s how you can make it:

How to Boil Orange Peels with Cloves

Ingredients:

  • 1-2 orange peels (from fresh oranges)

  • 1-2 tablespoons of whole cloves

  • 3-4 cups of water

  • Optional: Cinnamon sticks, star anise, or other spices for added fragrance

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Orange Peels:

    • Peel an orange (or two) and cut the peel into smaller pieces. The peels can be in strips or chunks—whatever you prefer.

  2. Simmer the Ingredients:

    • Place the orange peels and cloves (and any optional spices like cinnamon sticks or star anise) into a pot.

    • Add about 3-4 cups of water to the pot, depending on the size of your pot and how much fragrance you want.

  3. Boil and Simmer:

    • Bring the water to a boil. Once it starts to boil, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer.

    • As it simmers, the scent of the oranges and cloves will start to fill your home. You can simmer it for as long as you like, adding more water if it evaporates. (Some people keep a simmering pot on the stove all day for an all-day fragrance experience.)

  4. Keep an Eye on It:

    • Make sure the water level doesn’t get too low, as the mixture can burn if left unattended.

    • If you want to keep the scent going throughout the day, you can just add fresh water as needed.

  5. Optional Additions:

    • For extra warmth, you can add a few slices of fresh ginger or a dash of vanilla extract. The possibilities are endless depending on what scent profile you’re after.

Benefits:

  • Aromatherapy: The combination of orange and cloves is naturally calming, making it a great way to relax and unwind.

  • Air Freshener: It’s a natural way to freshen up your home without chemicals.

  • Seasonal Ambiance: The scent of orange and cloves is especially cozy and festive during fall and winter.

Alternative Method (Slow Cooker Version):

If you want to keep the scent going all day without needing to watch a pot on the stove, you can use a slow cooker. Just add the orange peels, cloves, and water to the slow cooker and let it simmer on low. This can last for several hours or even a whole day.

Let me know if you try it out! It’s one of those simple things that really makes a difference in setting the mood at home.
