Amish Apple Fritter

Posted on March 28, 2025
An Amish Apple Fritter is a classic treat that’s crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, often loaded with chunks of sweet apple, and sometimes spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg. They’re usually deep-fried and finished with a glaze or dusted with powdered sugar.

Here’s a simple recipe to make them:

Amish Apple Fritters Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 tsp baking powder

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1/2 cup whole milk

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 2 tbsp melted butter

  • 1 1/2 cups peeled, diced apples (about 2 medium apples)

  • 1 tbsp lemon juice (optional, helps keep apples fresh)

  • Vegetable oil for frying

  • Powdered sugar or glaze for finishing

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Apples:

    • Peel, core, and dice the apples into small chunks.

    • If desired, toss the apple chunks with a tablespoon of lemon juice to prevent browning.

  2. Make the Batter:

    • In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg (if using).

    • In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and melted butter.

    • Gradually add the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined (be careful not to overmix).

  3. Add the Apples:

    • Gently fold in the diced apples until evenly distributed.

  4. Heat the Oil:

    • Heat about 3-4 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pan or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C). You can test the temperature by dropping a small amount of batter into the oil—if it sizzles and rises to the top, the oil is ready.

  5. Fry the Fritters:

    • Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry in batches, cooking for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.

    • Remove the fritters with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.

  6. Glaze or Powdered Sugar:

    • If you like, you can dust the fritters with powdered sugar while they’re still warm.

    • Alternatively, drizzle with a simple glaze made from powdered sugar and a bit of milk or water (mix until smooth).

  7. Serve:

    • Serve warm with a cup of coffee or hot cider. Enjoy!

Tips:

  • If you want a little extra sweetness, you can dip the fritters in a glaze made of powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla.

  • Try using a variety of apples for a different flavor twist. Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Granny Smith are all great options.
