White sauce style chicken

Posted on March 27, 2025
White Sauce Style Chicken is a delicious, creamy chicken dish where the chicken is cooked in a rich, velvety white sauce made from ingredients like butter, cream, and seasonings. This dish is a comfort food favorite and pairs well with rice, pasta, or crusty bread.

Here’s a simple and tasty recipe for White Sauce Style Chicken:

Ingredients:

For the Chicken:

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (or thighs if you prefer)

  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 1 tsp garlic powder (optional)

  • 1 tsp paprika (optional)

For the White Sauce:

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups whole milk (or half-and-half for a richer sauce)

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (optional, for extra richness)

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for extra flavor)

  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg (optional)

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • Chopped parsley (for garnish)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Chicken:

  • Season the chicken breasts with salt, pepper, and optional garlic powder and paprika for flavor.

  • Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the chicken breasts.

  • Cook the chicken for about 5-7 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through (internal temperature should reach 165°F or 75°C). Once cooked, remove the chicken from the skillet and set it aside. Keep it warm.

2. Make the White Sauce:

  • In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for 1 minute until fragrant.

  • Sprinkle flour over the melted butter and cook, whisking constantly, for about 1-2 minutes to form a roux (this will help thicken the sauce).

  • Gradually pour in the milk while whisking to avoid lumps. Continue whisking until the mixture thickens, about 4-5 minutes.

  • Stir in the heavy cream (if using), Parmesan cheese, nutmeg (optional), and additional salt and pepper to taste. Let the sauce simmer for another 2-3 minutes until it becomes thick and creamy.

3. Combine Chicken and Sauce:

  • Return the cooked chicken breasts to the skillet, spooning some of the white sauce over the top. Let the chicken simmer in the sauce for another 5 minutes to ensure the flavors meld together.

  • If the sauce becomes too thick, you can add a splash of milk or chicken broth to reach your desired consistency.

4. Serve:

  • Serve the White Sauce Style Chicken with the creamy sauce spooned over the top. Garnish with chopped parsley for a fresh touch.

  • This dish pairs wonderfully with rice, pasta, or mashed potatoes. You can also serve it with a side of steamed vegetables or a crisp salad.

Tips:

  • Vegetable Add-ins: You can add sautéed mushrooms, spinach, or peas to the sauce for added flavor and texture.

  • Cheese Options: If you want more cheesy flavor, try adding a bit of shredded mozzarella or gouda to the sauce.

  • For extra flavor: A squeeze of lemon juice just before serving can help balance the richness of the sauce.

This White Sauce Style Chicken is a creamy, comforting dish that’s perfect for a cozy dinner. It’s simple yet indulgent, and it’s sure to be a hit at the dinner table. Enjoy!
