Shepherd’s Pie is a classic comfort food dish made with ground meat (traditionally lamb), vegetables, and a creamy mashed potato topping, baked until golden and bubbly. Here’s a traditional recipe:


🥘 Classic Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

Ingredients:

For the meat filling:

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 medium onion, chopped

  • 2 carrots, diced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 lb ground lamb (or beef for “Cottage Pie”)

  • 2 tbsp tomato paste

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 cup beef broth

  • 1 tsp fresh thyme (or ½ tsp dried)

  • 1 cup frozen peas

  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the mashed potato topping:

  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and cubed

  • ¼ cup butter

  • ¼ cup milk (add more for creamier potatoes)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Optional: ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese (for topping)


Instructions:

  1. Boil the Potatoes:

    • Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender (about 15 minutes).

    • Drain and mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper. Set aside.

  2. Prepare the Meat Filling:

    • Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat.

    • Add onion, carrots, and garlic; sauté until softened (5-7 minutes).

    • Add ground lamb and cook until browned. Drain excess fat if needed.

    • Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and beef broth. Simmer for 10 minutes until thickened.

    • Add peas and season with salt and pepper.

  3. Assemble the Pie:

    • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

    • Spread the meat mixture in a baking dish.

    • Top evenly with mashed potatoes. Use a fork to create texture.

    • Optional: Sprinkle with shredded cheese.

  4. Bake:

    • Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.

  5. Serve:

    • Let cool slightly before serving.
